This is a conditioning hike to the summit of Cold Mountain via the steeper route, leaving from the Daniel Boone Boy Scout Camp and taking the Art Loeb and Cold Mountain Trails to the peak.
I will be keeping a brisk pace and taking very few breaks. This means:

If you are not able to keep up with the pace or wish to stop frequently, you may be hiking by yourself. You will need to be an experienced hiker (with recent experience at this distance/elevation gain), self-sufficient, and know what you need to bring for winter hiking to participate in this outing.
Total mileage: 11 round trip Elevation gain: 3,000 feet Meeting time: 9 am We'll get started at 9:15 sharp and should be back at our cars by 2 or 3. Meeting point: Daniel Boone Scout Camp, 3647 Little East Fork Rd, Canton, NC 28716-8672
If you're interested in carpooling, please post in the comments.
“ Under most conditions this is a great hike, beautiful, forested mountainside climb with wonderful views from the ridgetops. Several small creek crossings and a few level campspots. After the snow we've had, the treefall and remaining snow made for slow and careful going. This route is consistantly steep and fairly rough as it is maintained as a wilderness area. ”
“ Wow!!! Snow, ice, mud, and poorly marked, maintained, often invisible trail = all kinds of fun! An adventurous day altogether. It will be fun to do this trail again soon (maybe without the snow and ice?). Thanks, everyone, for sticking together. ”
