THIS IS A STRENUOUS HIKE. 10 miles round trip, out and back trail. And it can be pretty steep going both up and down hill.
Also, to be perfectly clear, I've done this hike once, and I want to go back. I'm willing to take a few people with me. There is a possibility we'll be exploring the area beyond what's planned (ie getting lost) so if 10 miles sounds like a real stretch for you, please don't sign up for this hike. I recall the trail being pretty easy to follow, but be prepared for anything.
Yellow Mountain is located near Highlands, NC. The trail terminates at the old Yellow Mountain Fire Tower which gives you an opportunity to view a magnificent 360 degree view of the NC mountains. The trail proceeds over Cole Mountain, Shortoff Mountain and Goat Knob before the final climb to the top of Yellow Mountain.
My hiking philosophy, for those who haven't hiked with me...I like long, strenuous trails. You need to be in pretty good shape to join this hike. I tend to hike 2-2.5 mph without a ton of breaks (although we'll take the occasional snack break, and we'll stop to have lunch and enjoy the view by the old fire tower). Everyone will be free to take this at their own pace, I will not force the group to walk together if you prefer to run ahead or linger. There will probably be someone in the group who wants to go your pace. This is an in and out hike, so if you are significantly faster or slower, that's ok! we'll see you on the way out.
Rendezvous in Highlands NC is 10:45am. If you'd like to carpool please contact Heather.
